I’m on the <a href="http://www.bonappetit.com/"><span class="s1">Bon Appétit homepage</span></a>!<br />

<div class="p1">
I am featured in an article titled, <a href="http://www.bonappetit.com/restaurants-travel/article/new-orleans-love-story"><span class="s1">New Orleans: A Love Story</span></a>. I was contacted by the magazine a few months ago when they were searching for a local food writer with the inside scoop. I was asked to answer a very long list of questions about where to get the best po boys/ beignets/ cocktails/ etc… Unfortunately, of the 20 or so questions I answered they only printed one of my answers! Instead of including the restaurants that I recommended they stuffed the article with cliches about Commander’s Palace and the Ya-Ka-Mein Lady.</div>

I am still very grateful for the opportunity and ecstatic that my face is on the homepage of such a fabulous site (kissing a crawfish of course), but I’m bummed I didn’t get to promote all my favorite spots.</div>

The good news is I now have a ton of unpublished material and pics that I can publish for all of you lovely readers!</div>

The <a href="http://backbayouvintage.com/worlds-largest-crawfish-boil/"><span class="s1">World's Largest Crawfish Boil</span></a> was a huge success! Zatarain's broke 2 records in just 2 hours after selling out 29,000 pounds of crawfish to over 8,000 people. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLF7JQkcl7nW43jXjSXxG0uAMFOlneK9TI7AfTcsoaDGg0BC4OcX2YefT26dEzqqsAgyHBNRFeaZZK_UckK2IZr-IOk5C7gqjfIa5iR25yVUX6h2Z7aTOM4AtsmDECmDHsmLpRVS19crU-/s1600/IMG_8737.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLF7JQkcl7nW43jXjSXxG0uAMFOlneK9TI7AfTcsoaDGg0BC4OcX2YefT26dEzqqsAgyHBNRFeaZZK_UckK2IZr-IOk5C7gqjfIa5iR25yVUX6h2Z7aTOM4AtsmDECmDHsmLpRVS19crU-/s1600/IMG_8737.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: center;">
According to the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the event broke the record for the largest attendance, and the largest amount of crawfish boiled at a crawfish boil in a single day. More importantly, the event raised $40,000 for Second Harvest Food Bank!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDVUGptk_DFzbXJd6pUEyKq8RbKvZbUDInd1C9x8FSLfa0OkZxSGKgj_KPNyZFcqusQGFkZQ0R71Pqhyrnm7PhINmmGksEchj-Vl_3oY6o2Bdalp5pe4daSZvDDg_vTe1SGZCxtD4C7XOr/s1600/IMG_8771.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDVUGptk_DFzbXJd6pUEyKq8RbKvZbUDInd1C9x8FSLfa0OkZxSGKgj_KPNyZFcqusQGFkZQ0R71Pqhyrnm7PhINmmGksEchj-Vl_3oY6o2Bdalp5pe4daSZvDDg_vTe1SGZCxtD4C7XOr/s1600/IMG_8771.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: center;">
Though the crawfish didn't last as long as planned, it was a really amazing event - with free live music and a ton of beer for sale!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="p1" style="text-align: center;">
Hopefully the success of the event will encourage more organizations and companies to throw similar city-wide crawfish boils! </div>

After 3 successful DIY segments on The 504, I will now be their official DIY expert & regular guest on the show! That means even more crafting and hanging out with the always lovely Sheba Turk – plus free publicity for Back Bayou Vintage, so I’m pretty stoked! To kick off my reign as “Miss DIY,” I was featured in an entire episode of The 504- not just the usual 6 minute segment, the whole 30 minute show!</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #373737; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; text-align: center;"> Watch the episode here and follow my DIY blog:</span> <a href="http://backbayouvintage.com/">BackBayouVintage.com</a>!<br />

Morning Call has reopened their doors in Mid City! Now you don't have to drive all the way to Metairie to get your hands on their deliciously doughy beignets. Situated in the heart on City Park in the Old Casino building, the restaurant maintains its old world charm, a good reminder that it was the first beignet cafe in New Orleans. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Though I may get some criticism for saying this, I must admit I like their beignets better than Cafe du Monde. However, I can't say the same thing about their cafe au lait, which is good, but not as great as CDM's.</div>

They also are open 24/7, have a menu full of tasty local cuisine (including aligator sausage), and they have soft serve! Plus, you can rent out the venue for private events (which would be awesome for a wedding). I just went to a lovely masquerade ball there last week. Check out my <a href="http://backbayouvintage.wordpress.com/2013/01/08/bal-des-artiste-fashion-show/">Back Bayou Vintage</a> blog <a href="http://backbayouvintage.wordpress.com/2013/01/08/bal-des-artiste-fashion-show/">post </a>to see more pics of the venue and the event!</div>

<br />
After a year of writing for the Hungry Heretic I decided to pursue my real dream this past January, and finally open my vintage clothing store, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/BackBayouVintage">Back Bayou Vintage </a>on Etsy.com. Back Bayou Vintage LLC is an elegant collection of vintage and handmade goods, created, restored, and acquired in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPF0zj1bjZ3H0-CWn7ZF42doUwXj9nLhiUEpCGsLIn34Eaj_wlPz7cZEmu5Y2smXByB7CB3ZdcEzqGbhxjNief-2WZKiogrwgdjB_8eYI-G4RzQ55rIijVODDcgjsh8nl0-vU0bGCFlSe8/s1600/img_3936.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPF0zj1bjZ3H0-CWn7ZF42doUwXj9nLhiUEpCGsLIn34Eaj_wlPz7cZEmu5Y2smXByB7CB3ZdcEzqGbhxjNief-2WZKiogrwgdjB_8eYI-G4RzQ55rIijVODDcgjsh8nl0-vU0bGCFlSe8/s1600/img_3936.jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
After 5 month of hard work my store is finally taking off and it's time to launch my fashion/style/ design blog: <a href="http://backbayouvintage.wordpress.com/">backbayouvintage.wordpress.com</a>!<br />
<br />
I cannot express how humbled I am by the following the Hungry Heretic has received and I am very happy to continue providing entertainment to my readers. It may be a different topic, but it is still the same fun, easy-going writing style, colorful photos, and New Orleans tidbits.<br />
<br />
Thank you so much for your continued love and support, I hope you enjoy the new direction my writing is going in. Please stay in touch, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.<br />
<br />
Catch you on the flip side,<br />
<br />

Moreover, it's the year of the dragon! How awesome if that!?!?!?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAGYcVVfTwdSIH6WwNV5lzmvC3ZBhRx08PWwn0sqWnf3oXrsrNRK6zieLDfWsRp2Ma3YEsgliL8m1OZr-19KwWD_vnyY2vcVaLCkqkVdj_TJxHB6WeFtmfOcE2N0TWWMiUQOKX0dyl00-J/s1600/IMG_1450.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAGYcVVfTwdSIH6WwNV5lzmvC3ZBhRx08PWwn0sqWnf3oXrsrNRK6zieLDfWsRp2Ma3YEsgliL8m1OZr-19KwWD_vnyY2vcVaLCkqkVdj_TJxHB6WeFtmfOcE2N0TWWMiUQOKX0dyl00-J/s320/IMG_1450.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">So to celebrate this momentous occasion I decided to reflect on some lovely Americanized Chinese food you can find in New Orleans. One of my favorite spots to go is <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/57/1416901/restaurant/Central-City/Hoshun-New-Orleans">Hoshun </a>on St. Charles. Their portions are enormous (as you can see above) and they serve a variety of pan-Asian cuisine, including sushi (which is okay, good, not great), Vietnamese, and Thai. One of my favorite dishes they serve is their Thai curry soup, yummmmmmmmmm!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV9fioTMB0cxOB1fiLvfMOySoAsCjK0VxJFGHINDP_dkx_uNvxpeJ11PZqdd3wmx0a0KEivAvDU4dGFE24k5MCmOJYVBHyALT-u30xKiWTgmqRW_6UjRrDcQiRz7v6Lq2TOciFwI0d3Eyz/s1600/IMG_1451.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV9fioTMB0cxOB1fiLvfMOySoAsCjK0VxJFGHINDP_dkx_uNvxpeJ11PZqdd3wmx0a0KEivAvDU4dGFE24k5MCmOJYVBHyALT-u30xKiWTgmqRW_6UjRrDcQiRz7v6Lq2TOciFwI0d3Eyz/s320/IMG_1451.JPG" width="320" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/57/1416901/restaurant/Central-City/Hoshun-New-Orleans"><img alt="Hoshun on Urbanspoon" src="http://www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/1416901/biglink.gif" style="border: currentColor; height: 146px; width: 200px;" /></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7582591037938212127.post-29531137419642596722012-01-24T08:52:00.001-06:002012-01-24T08:53:11.901-06:00Vietnamese New Year!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In honor of the Vietnamese New Year I wanted to post quite a few photos of incredible Vietnamese cuisine from all over the city!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw__niR20o8u29NWnXnTqVA-Jyi-TUxAmzO1chbLBBthIWvRw-WE3RO7LnyO8Fe9BadmVfMwz6Y1T7D_PccTbOAiUNdDzqLj1_cKXANjYYKsgASF3ivOYxMQCLqZrHGtcN0yIxAoBsKUPK/s1600/IMG_2312.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw__niR20o8u29NWnXnTqVA-Jyi-TUxAmzO1chbLBBthIWvRw-WE3RO7LnyO8Fe9BadmVfMwz6Y1T7D_PccTbOAiUNdDzqLj1_cKXANjYYKsgASF3ivOYxMQCLqZrHGtcN0yIxAoBsKUPK/s400/IMG_2312.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Above is a beautiful bowl of pho from <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/57/1558420/restaurant/Audubon/Singletons-Poboy-New-Orleans">Singleton's </a>(a spectacular corner store in the Black Pearl). You can get this alluring bowl of soup late into the evening down the Street from Mimi's in the Marigny at the <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/57/1552999/restaurant/Bywater/Lost-Love-Lounge-Vietnamese-Kitchen-New-Orleans">Lost Love Lounge Vietnamese Kitchen</a>. Published!!!<div style="text-align: center;">I finally made it in print! Though 99.9% of my articles have been published online, I've finally crossed the threshold to paper publishing... and the article wasn't even about food! Though I love food writing, I was beginning to eat myself into a writing rut, so this was a nice change of pace. If you'd like to read the article you can check out <a href="http://offbeat.com/2011/11/01/the-musical-old-u-s-mint/">The Musical Old U.S. Mint</a> online <a href="http://offbeat.com/2011/11/01/the-musical-old-u-s-mint/">here</a> or pick up the latest copy of OffBeat Magazine (available at most coffee shops around town).</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7582591037938212127.post-19857746142632951732011-10-12T11:39:00.000-05:002011-10-12T11:39:50.472-05:00The Last Supper<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0066cc;"><span style="color: black;">The Last Supper is just a week and a half away!!! No, I'm not talking about THAT last supper, though there will be a minor Chirstian theme to this one too (considering the star is a Reverend), I'm talking about </span><u> </u></span><a href="http://offbeat.com/2011/09/22/the-last-supper-of-the-man-who-ate-new-orleans/">The Last Supper of The Man Who Ate New Orleans</a>! Unlike the original last supper, this will NOT be a gloomy event, infact, it's a celebration! Celebrating Ray Cannata's accomplishment of his monsterous goal of eating at every restaurant in NOLA!!!! Plus, it's an event to showcase and promote the fabulous film that follows Cannata's gastronomic journey through New Orleans Cuisine, appropriately titled <a href="http://tmwanola.sitebrew.net/">The Man Who Ate New Orleans</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://tmwanola.sitebrew.net/sites/default/files/eatnolaposter2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://tmwanola.sitebrew.net/sites/default/files/eatnolaposter2.jpg" style="height: 536px; width: 350px;" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">The big event will be on October 21 at the St. Charles Hilton, with music by Rebirth Brass Band and fully catered by Besh Steakhouse (wine pairings included). The guests will be the first to see a short from the documentary, and may end up in the real deal because the dinner will be filmed and added to end of the feature! So if you want to possibly be in a movie, while sipping on wine, dancin to Rebirth and grubbin on fancy steak you DO NOT want to miss this EPIC event! Tickets are $200 per person (and partially tax deductible, woohoo!) and are <a href="http://thelastsupper.eventbrite.com/" target="_blank" title="Buy tickets to The Last Supper"><span style="color: #c42124;">available online</span></a>. </div><div style="text-align: center;">I sure hope to be there, Don't You?!?!?!?!?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://tmwanola.sitebrew.net/sites/default/files/last-supper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://tmwanola.sitebrew.net/sites/default/files/last-supper.jpg" style="height: 200px; margin-top: 10px; width: 337px;" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Their onion rings can convert even the most hard core dieter into a fried food lover. After taking one bite of these sweet crunchy red onions I decided to never have a white onion-onion ring again. And in case you're more of a breakfast food lover you can always get a single with a fried egg and bacon on top (only $3 extra for both)!<br />

Drum roll please..... I now am not only a food writer/waitress/non-profit slave, I'm also a party entertainer! Not just any kind of entertainer, a Princess Party Entertainer! This business venture is not exactly traditional, but it has been a pipe dream of mine since my 7th Birthday Party, when I had my very own Aladdin and Jasmine impersonators (a.k.a. my babysitter and her boyfriend). So I am finally pursuing my dream career from childhood (yes, I am that desperate for extra cash and a job I can have fun with). I know many of my friends will laugh when they read this, but I need to spread the message on the web so I can get more customers!!!!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #674ea7;"><br />

Just listen to the description on their website and drool over these mouthwatering photos: "Inspired by old world meat markets, Chef Donald Link + Chef Stephen Stryjewski’s Cochon Butcher in the Warehouse District specializes in house made artisan meats + sausages made on premise." Old world meat markets? Hell YES! Can you only afford an appetizer at most restaurants? Don't worry, me too! That's why I've been on a serious hunt for affordable dinning in this city. In my most recent OffBeat Magazine tell-all <a href="http://offbeat.com/2011/09/06/a-buffet-revival-at-east-buffet/"><i>A Buffet Revival at East Buffet </i></a>I wrote about my rediscovery of all-you-can-eat buffets.</div><div class="bloggerplus_image_section"></div><div align="center" class="bloggerplus_image_section"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPRp9H9DMGy9aoarM-i6NBs7ctjMFI-3mHbKqbEjsdiked1xIrM5DQkZDfBvpPC2HU033SnYFE_FSZCYJLH5rs6xdIqg6UBieIZdi34cnNpLRXWWBmqRBQbVeWkJKWfn1mWVLME33hmpMw/" /><br />
I was always a bit on the snobby side of the pan-asian buffet scene, but my tight budget led me down to Severn in Metairie and right to East Buffet. I was stunned to find some really tasty food displayed under the glaring heat lamps.<br />

East Buffet had all the usual Chinese-American dishes including lo-mein, fried rice, and as many different styles of chicken as you can think of. </div><div class="bloggerplus_image_section"></div><div align="center" class="bloggerplus_image_section"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt0l9sWAj_4SpNz9DPi841e3vQ8FRRVDur-qCHwhCwDpc4VZJ5jCbLpjCsp9gNNDuHHesNdomy7pT22mWuhvObfMKc1wc1Dzko2uozLb5yjQhd7W394Jmt5QtQGxWZ0HeKdPicCo9Wb8tI/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt0l9sWAj_4SpNz9DPi841e3vQ8FRRVDur-qCHwhCwDpc4VZJ5jCbLpjCsp9gNNDuHHesNdomy7pT22mWuhvObfMKc1wc1Dzko2uozLb5yjQhd7W394Jmt5QtQGxWZ0HeKdPicCo9Wb8tI/" /></a></div>They also had Tempura fried vegetables, green beans and many other hearty green vegetables (covered in super unhealthy sauces of course).<br />

I was a little hesitant to try the sushi... something about all-you-can-eat and raw fish just doesn't seem to mesh well in my mind, but I decided to try it anyway and it was actually pretty good, not great, but good. And they have an entirely deep fried spicy crawfish roll that I think should definitely be at the next Louisiana State Fair!<br />

The best roll I had was the tiny seaweed salad and cucumber roll shown above... it actually was better than the seaweed salad itself.<br />

I'm no Martha Stewart, but I have a few homemaker tricks and shortcuts up my sleeve, especially when it comes to ironing. Like many others, I HATE ironing. It's heavy, annoying, and knowing my clumsiness, dangerous. For years I straightened out my wrinkly blouses with a straightening iron (seriously) until I discovered wrinkle release spray! This wonderful spray bottle holds a magical potion that will make even the most wrinkly shirt presentable, and it only costs a few bucks!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://media.downy.com//images/common/proddetail/products/new_wrinkle_releaser.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://media.downy.com//images/common/proddetail/products/new_wrinkle_releaser.png" width="371" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">You can easily and safely make this miraculous concoction at home. All you need is water, fabric softener and a spray bottle. Simply drop two capfuls of fabric softener in the spray bottle and fill the rest with water.<br />

Lakeview is just about the antithesis of the hood, so it is pretty ironic that Russell's Marina Grill (a favorite among Metairie elderly) serves up this semi-stigmatized dish. But damn do they do it well! Russel would make Roscoe proud, if he wasn't stealing his business. No need to fly all the way out to LA for this breakfast, we got it in our own back yard! Though I wanted to take Eric to a legit taco cart we ended up finding ourselves at <a href="http://loteriagrill.com/">Loteria Grill </a>in the Farmers Market at the Grove.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFujhujFee70rLjXPbkFwqsRrDrXf4GPpbPdkrkNZqFIEYieE58Rntp-WPt4LzqCaaSRQA9Df2DjSADmtyWMlyiiEPTrq1uJgYZuj4h1jGhFE8YlI5PhEs5YO5uXjUNG0r-Pp3GMYj-ZNo/s1600/image6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFujhujFee70rLjXPbkFwqsRrDrXf4GPpbPdkrkNZqFIEYieE58Rntp-WPt4LzqCaaSRQA9Df2DjSADmtyWMlyiiEPTrq1uJgYZuj4h1jGhFE8YlI5PhEs5YO5uXjUNG0r-Pp3GMYj-ZNo/s400/image6.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
The tacos were really good, and definitely more trendy than what you'll find on wheels.<br />

We did get some interesting grub including a <b>Chicharron en Salsa Verde</b> Taco with Pork Rinds in a Spicy Tomatillo Sauce Served With Finely Chopped Onion and Cilantro and Queso Fresco, a <b>Carne deshebrada</b> Taco with Shredded Beef Served with Fresh Guacamole, Salsa Chipotle, and Finely Chopped Onion and Cilantro, and a <b>Mole Poblano con Pollo</b> Taco with Chicken in Mole Poblano Served with Sesame Seeds, Finely Chopped Onion, and Queso Fresco. They were all fabulous, and so was the cactus salad! <br />
